The foods you choose to eat have a very real impact on your health and quality of life. This is my core principle and my approach with holistic nutrition is to empower you with practical food knowledge and to help you understand how eating affects your individual health and well being. My goal is to give you the skills and encouragement to create and enjoy meals made with fresh, whole foods that suit your lifestyle, tastes, and budget.

Since the mid-1900's, our food system has supported a limited diet of low-nutrient, processed, and packaged foods. We've lost the knowledge of where food comes from, how to cook it, and the social bonds that come from sharing a home-cooked meal with the people we love. Seasonal, local, and organic cooking isn't a modern trend, it was the norm for our ancestors, and something we need to rediscover if we're going to be truly healthy.

There is no 'one size fits all' solution. That's why there are so many diets out there with people vouching for each. Biochemical individuality is a very real thing and different body types, life situations, and nutritional needs means what's required for your optimal wellbeing is an ever-evolving target. That's why a holistic approach focuses on enabling you with the skills to learn how to tune into signals that your body is giving you. You can understand which foods work for you intuitively, without having to look to external sources to tell you what and how much to eat. You'll learn how to become an expert on you!

What we eat has a huge effect on our body's ability to deal with chronic health conditions. Unfortunately our culture is suffering from a rise in chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease - and low-nutrient diets are certainly a contributing factor. But even that contains good news. It shows that chronic illness is dynamic, you're not doomed to suffer a chronic condition even if your parents have. Turning to a whole foods diet, exercise, and targeted supplementation can be effective at turning around chronic disease and warding off debilitating illness.

In order to care for ourselves completely, we have to look at the big picture. It would be a mistake to assume that all health issues can be resolved by making dietary changes alone. Your body's vital functions and the optimal absorption of nutrients can only happen when you get enough sleep each night, manage your stress, get adequate exercise, and remember to have fun. Holistic nutrition requires a focus on all aspects of health - physical, emotional, mental - as well as the connections between them to make sure we get you feeling your best.

NEVER DIET AGAIN

The stats show that dieting doesn't work. About 95% of people who lose weight on a diet will regain it in 1-5 years. It also becomes harder and harder to stick to a diet as time goes on. The deprivation of a strict diet can lead to a cycle of dieting followed by binging. In addition, the deprivation of a restrictive diet is inherently unhealthy and can signal to your body that it's in danger of starvation and slow your metabolism. Weight and health are not the same thing. There is a misconception in our society that they are, when in fact, it's possible to be healthy and happy at a variety of shapes and sizes. 

 

NO MORE "GOOD" OR "BAD" FOODS

Our society has assigned morality to food. It teaches us if it tastes good, then it's an "indulgence" and we should feel bad about eating it and look to exercise so we can "earn" a treat. We're faced with judgment and shame for our food choices and, in turn, we judge and shame others. This contributes to a dysfunctional relationship with food, ourselves, and each other and can lead to disordered eating. Empower yourself with the knowledge that food is just food. Once you understand how different foods affect how you think, feel, and perform, you can make an informed and conscious decision about the foods you consume, without any guilt or shame.

 

GET CONFIDENT IN YOUR FOOD CHOICES

It's totally normal to be confused about what to eat. Our daily newsfeeds are filled with articles claiming that some food is the secret to health, or weight loss, or will make you live forever. Then you turn around and find another article claiming that same food will give you cancer, harden your arteries, or make you depressed. On top of that, every product in the grocery store is covered in health claims: "Sugar-free" "Zero fat!" "All natural!" Learn how to read labels with an informed eye and cut through the noise to understand which food choices are right for you.

After too many long days in corporate marketing with not enough sleep, too much stress, and a poor relationship with food, I hit rock bottom with my health.  After discovering the vitality and energy that comes along with a whole foods diet and more natural lifestyle, I quit my 9-5 job and went back to school to earn a certificate in holistic nutrition from Bauman College in Berkeley.  Now I'm using my real life experiences and education to help people feel better from the inside out.
